This year we hosted thanksgiving, and because it was the first thanksgiving in our new home, we celebrated with new table wear. Our kitchen is mostly white with Navy/Indigo Blue accents. Incorporating seasonal colour can sometimes be difficult if you want to blend colours. After reading AKA Design’s workbook and site on mixing colours, I have a lot more confidence mixing colours. Blue is a primary colour so it has some advantages when mixing. It fits well with a natural colour pallet (Blue, Green and Brown) and also has a monochromatic range into other colours I love like Teal.
When I think Fall I think Orange. This was a starting point for our table. Lucky me, Orange’s complimentary colour on the colour wheel is Blue! So we have a great contrast of colour. Next on the list is pattern, I wanted to switch up leafy prints with plaid, in honour of our recent trip to Scotland. I picked up a great orange and brown plaid table runner and a blue and orange floral napkin in late summer at Homesense. Note: when looking for seasonal décor at homesense look at least 4 months ahead, they will stocked shockingly early. Don’t wait for clearance or sales, they don’t happen there.
Next I repurposed a indigo globe vase we already had in the kitchen and put faux wheat instead of flowers in. I do love floral on a table but, because I prefer real verses fake flowers, that means upping the budget. Instead I spent the money on wood and fabric pumpkins that we can reuse next year and at Halloween. Finally we grabbed a bag tiny plastic pumpkins and chalk clips from Dollarama for name holders and Vola ! A Thanksgiving table for under $30. We will definitely reuse the napkins and chalk clips for other events too.
